PayPay Card: How to Apply and Digital Cashback Explained

PayPay Card is a Japanese credit card issued by PayPay Card Corporation

It’s available on the Visa, Mastercard, and JCB networks, and you can choose the brand at the time of application. Brand changes later require applying for a new card.

Annual fees: the standard PayPay Card has no annual fee. PayPay Card Gold has an annual fee of ¥11,000 (tax-incl.).

How the “Digital Cashback” Works (PayPay Points)

PayPay Card’s “cashback” is paid as PayPay Points inside the PayPay app.

  • Base earn rate: 1.0% of eligible card spend for PayPay Card; up to 1.5% for PayPay Card Gold. Points are calculated in 200-yen units (example: ¥1,000 eligible spend → 10 points at 1.0%).
  • Bonus via PayPay Step: if you register your card in the PayPay app and meet the monthly activity thresholds (at least 30 payments of ≥¥200 each and ≥¥100,000 total in the month), you can earn an extra +0.5% during the applicable period.
  • When you get points: card points are generally granted around the 15th of the following month; PayPay Step bonuses follow their own schedule.
  • Point basics: 1 point = ¥1 when paying with PayPay. Points can’t be withdrawn as cash or transferred to others. They can be used at PayPay-accepting merchants and official stores in the app.

PayPay Card’s “cashback” is digital

Expect 1.0% back on eligible spend (or up to 1.5% on Gold), with a possible +0.5% via PayPay Step if you hit the monthly usage conditions.

How to Apply for the PayPay Card

The application is online and available 24/7. The issuer states that screening can be completed in as little as 2 minutes.

1) Start the application

Select PayPay Card (no annual fee) or PayPay Card Gold (¥11,000/year). Enter your personal details (name, address, employment, etc.).

2) Register your payment account (recommended during application)

If you register a bank account for payments during the application, you’ll be able to see your card number and expiry shortly after approval.

Also, use the number for online purchases immediately.

If you choose to submit bank info later (e.g., by mail), first use will typically wait for the physical card to arrive.

3) Screening

Applications submitted during 21:30–10:00 are generally reviewed after 12:00 the following day.

4) Receive your card

Delivery is typically about one week. If you did not register your bank account online, you may need to show photo ID at delivery.

5) Link your card in the PayPay app (recommended)

Register your card in the PayPay app to manage statements, view your number on a numberless card, and participate in PayPay Step.

When required (e.g., for certain app functions), the PayPay app supports verification with My Number Card or a driver’s license.

It’s done via chip read or document + face capture.

Using the Card & Payment Options

Usable anywhere Visa/Mastercard/JCB are accepted in Japan and abroad. Contactless (tap) is supported across all three brands.

You may hold up to three PayPay Cards (different designs/brands). Gold is typically one per person.

You can convert eligible purchases to installments later (あとから分割) in the app/online (3–48 installments; fees apply).

Digital Cashback (PayPay Points): Practical Tips

Register in the app. Link your card so transactions count toward PayPay Step; meeting the activity thresholds adds +0.5%.

Know the unit. Points are calculated per ¥200 (tax-incl.), so tiny amounts under each ¥200 step won’t round up.

Auto-use points. In the app, choose to apply points automatically at checkout if you prefer not to stockpile them.

Limits. Points aren’t cash and can’t be transferred. Use them at PayPay-accepting merchants and official stores in the app.
